Love Cucumbers? Tainted Ones May Be In Your Salad Right Now? Tainted food coming to you at your local market!

I talk to people all the time on the problems with our food, no matter where it comes from. Now that California cannot grow its crops because of water restrictions, more food is now being imported from countries such as Mexico.  India and China are not the only countries that export tainted foods. Add Mexico to the list as well.  Just  because we are neighbors, does not mean their imported food is safe to eat. Remember the majority of the foods that are imported are not tested nor checked by the FDA. They do not have the time, nor the inspectors to test all of the billions of pounds of produce, meat, and fish that comes through the import process. Only a small percentage of food is tested, the rest just gets a nod and goes on through straight through to the company that sells it. This is the truth. Research it for yourself.  You want to think your food is tested because it makes you feel better when you eat your salad. 

This week's recall is cucumbers from Mexico.

Tainted Cucumbers making people sick this week.  RECALL ordered.

The California company who imported the cucumbers from Mexico is now dealing with a recall of the cucumbers due to salmonella.  One person is dead and 285 others are sick in 27 different U.S. states.  Here is the excerpt from the article here below:

"The company, Andrew and Williamson Fresh Produce, said it is recalling all cucumbers sold under the Limited Edition brand label from Aug. 1 through Thursday.
The cucumbers were produced in Baja California, Mexico, and distributed in at least 22 U.S. states, the company said in a statement."
Worry about Moringa but Worry MORE about the other foods you are eating!

More and more produce is coming from foreign countries whose standards are crude with no real way to properly wash their produce. When bathrooms are not readily available in those countries, where do they go? In the fields.  Where do they wash their hands? They don't because there is no way to wash their hands.   These same workers prepare the veggies for shipment to the U.S. company who sells it.  He does not test the shipments of veggies. Inspectors come once a year to make sure his company is adhering to proper procedures. The majority of the year, it is up to the integrity of the owner of that company to do proper safety steps on the veggies they sell. Testing may happen here and there but not on a regular basis.   If he tested every shipment,  you would be paying 5 bucks or more for each head of lettuce.  Testing does not always catch the problem. Testing involves samples taken from a large shipment. The tested samples may prove negative, because only part of the shipment is tainted. 

You write me all the time about Moringa but you don't realize the food you eat from your friendly supermarket is much more dangerous.  You question Moringa, which you should, but you don't question enough the other foods you eat on a regular basis. You eat more salads generally than Moringa.  You eat more antibiotic infused meat and eggs than Moringa. There is pesticide residue in everything. You eat pork that is raised in horrible conditions but you don't think about it.  

You need to start realizing Moringa is important, but all the rest of your diet is much more of a problem.  Modern big farm meat and produce is slowly poisoning us, with antibiotics and pesticide residue.  Those chemicals end up as toxins in the tissues and organs of the body. They cause all sorts of health problems and eventually disease.  It is a huge problem for people living in big cities who have few food choices on where they buy their food.  If you are poor, you cannot afford organic. You may not live near a farmer's market or may work hours that don't allow you to shop them.  It is the elephant in the room, that people don't want to talk about.   

What Can You Do?

Buy Locally when possible at a Farmer's Market.

Buy US grown when possible.  Look at the tags on the produce or ask the produce manager about the origin of the veggie or fruit.

Wash well any fruit or veggies, even it it says they are prewashed. Don't count on that being done properly or safely.

Buy organic if you can, it is worth it despite some of the articles.  Wash them well.

Grow your own veggies if possible in pots or in the ground. There are veggies that are meant to be grown in small plots or in pots. They were developed to take up less room including cucumbers and Take part in a community garden if there is one near you.  It is worth the time to do so.  If you don't have time, enroll your kids in a community project.  It will get them away from their phones.

The First Eggs Arrived Today......Finally! 10 Reasons to Raise Your Own Chickens?

Hi Folks, today is a blessing in many ways. Our first eggs laid in the nesting boxes!

It may be hard for some of you to appreciate today's blog, if you have never raised your own chickens. To some of you who have never tasted a real pasture raised egg, it is orange with amazing flavor. It is so fun and exciting to find your first eggs. You go through all the trouble of getting them raised and finally your reward....eggs.  It is about the quality of your food.  Learn why you should raise your own chickens and eggs in today's blog.

It was one of our goals to raise our own organic chickens and eggs here in Tennessee. 

This property came with 4 huge old sheds with some flat pasture. I knew from day one what I wanted to do with the whole area and the 4 side by side 12 ft high farm sheds. 

We built the chickens a huge indoor structure to lock them up at night in the first shed, leading out to a covered and protected middle area, then into an adjoining hard wired outdoor yard. The floor is concrete so nothing can dig its way in. We were blessed that we had these wonderful farm sheds to work with. Since they were 12 feet high, all the areas up to the roof had to be lined with wire.

We then fenced-in a pastured area surrounding the sheds and chicken yard where they are locked in at night rich with quality weeds, clover, and grass.  The pasture area has access to the three other side by side sheds for shelter if it's hot, raining or snowy outside. 

The 3 sheds are fenced in the back so the chickens can't get out of the sheds and predators can't get in.There is water in each shed in case the hawks are hanging out. The first 5 feet at the top of the sheds have tarps hanging down so the hawks cannot swoop into the sheds after them.  We spent a lot of time and money to make it so they could live in as much safety and freedom as possible.

You have to make chicken coops with hardwire  not chicken wire. Chicken wire keeps chickens in but does not keep predators out. You must make the coop where you lock them up at night, out of wood where raccoon hands cannot reach through and tear off their heads. Raccoons leave your chickens torn apart in is horrible. You must think like a predator who can jump 6 foot fences, climb, and open latches if too simple.

Two batches of chickens later and 5 months of feed, we have our first two eggs. The eggs were even laid in the nesting boxes we built, which is not always the case.  This week the younger chickens were integrated with the older ones which is filled with worry. It went very well and now all have complete freedom to go inside or outside their enclosure. They get to eat all the grass, weeds, and bugs they want.  Organic, healthy eggs and chickens. I didn't lose one from the beginning which was great.

Why go to all that trouble? Buying them at the store is simple. 

Here are 10 good reasons why you should raise your own chickens and eggs. Why Free-Ranging them on pasture is the difference.

#1:  You know your eggs come from healthy chickens. 'Big Farm' eggs come from chickens housed in tiny cages unable to move much. Often there are dead and ill chickens in the same cage. 

Even the commercial eggs labeled free-range are not really given much pasture. That term really misrepresents how they are raised in reality. There are many thousands of chickens in each area given a small area outside. Most chickens never see the outside or pasture.  

#2: You know your chickens were fed greens, bugs, and that makes the yolks naturally more orange colored with more flavor. The taste difference between greens fed chickens and Big Farm chickens is amazing.  You won't eat store bought eggs once you have tasted farm pasture raised chickens.

#3-10: Three Different Studies confirm that Free-Range chicken eggs contain more nutrition, less fat, less cholesterol than 'Big Farm' raised chickens. It is what you feed them that makes this difference. They must have access to pasture most of the day to get these results. Chickens raised in cages eating standard chicken feed will not give these results.

"A 1999 study by Barb Gorski at Pennsylvania State University found that eggs from pastured birds had 10 percent less fat, 34 percent less cholesterol, 40 percent more vitamin A, and four times the omega-3s compared to the standard USDA data. Her study also tested pastured chicken meat, and found it to have 21 percent less fat, 30 percent less saturated fat and 50 percent more vitamin A than the USDA standard."

"• In 2003, Heather Karsten at Pennsylvania State University compared eggs from two groups of Hy-Line variety hens, with one kept in standard crowded factory farm conditions and the other on mixed grass and legume pasture. The eggs had similar levels of fat and cholesterol, but the pastured eggs had three times more omega-3s, 220 percent more vitamin E and 62 percent more vitamin A than eggs from caged hens."

"• The 2005 study MOTHER EARTH NEWS conducted of four heritage-breed pastured flocks in Kansas found that pastured eggs had roughly half the cholesterol, 50 percent more vitamin E, and three times more beta carotene."

"Our testing has found that, compared to official U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) nutrient data for commercial eggs, eggs from hens raised on pasture may contain:

• 1/3 less cholesterol• 1/4 less saturated fat• 2/3 more vitamin A• 2 times more omega-3 fatty acids
• 3 times more vitamin E• 7 times more beta carotene"

In an emergency, you always have eggs available to eat and chickens if needed.

Chickens are great company and very soothing to the spirit. They are worth their weight in gold to soothe a tired and weary mind and body.

Chickens eats fleas, ticks, bugs of all sorts which help keep the yard pest free.

Chickens eat left overs like tomato and lettuce trimmings.  Less waste.

Even in many cities now, regulations allow you to have several chickens but no rooster.  Call to find out about the regulations in your area. No matter where you live, you must protect them from predators, even stray house cats.

Whats in Your Bacon and Pork? Drug Residue.....

Headline article states that China is refusing pork from the US, because of the drug they feed them which helps them get more money for the pigs.  The drug ractopamine is given to 80 to 90% of pigs raised in the US, unless they are organically raised.  

Here is an excerpt below,"

The drug, ractopamine hydrochloride, is fed to pigs and other animals right up until slaughter and minute traces have been found in meat. The European Union, China, Taiwan and many others have banned its use, citing concerns about its effect on human health, limiting U.S. meat exports to key markets.
Although few Americans outside of the livestock industry have ever heard of ractopamine, the feed additive is controversial. Fed to an estimated 60 to 80 percent of pigs in the United States, it has resulted in more reports of sickened or dead pigs than any other livestock drug on the market, an investigation of Food and Drug Administration records shows.
"While the Department of Agriculture has found traces of ractopamine in American beef and pork, they have not exceeded levels the FDA has determined are safe."  
There should be NO drugs in our meat.  None of it is safe to be ingesting.
Despite the horrible drug effects on the pigs and the residue which ends up in the meat, the FDA approved the drug and some drug residue is permitted....great for our health isn't it?
Canada and 24 other countries only care about their profit margin and not your health. If you eat any kind of meat from chicken to beef, there is drug residue that is permitted in the meat. That is why we have such a MRSA problem in the United States. There is antibiotic overuse in all big farm raised animals. That is because they house the animals in tiny cages where infection is a constant problem with animals given little care.  If you ever visited a stockyard or a chicken ranch, you won't eat meat for awhile.  I am not a vegetarian but we try to eat as organically as we can.  Meat is a small part of our meals.  
You Think your meat is tested before you eat it.  Think Again..........
Most of the pork is not tested. There is not enough time nor agents to do that.  Here is a quote," Last year, for example, no tests were conducted on 22 billion pounds of pork produced in the United States; 712 samples were taken from 26 billion pounds of beef but the results have not yet been released."
This is true for imports and food grown in our own country.  The truth is most of our food supply is untested!  
So perhaps pork should come off your list for foods you eat on a regular basis.  Organic should be your first choice if you do eat pork. Many of you are very worried about your Moringa quality. That is valid but you are missing the large white elephant in the room. Our own food supply is in serious question.  Moringa is only a tiny piece of our food intake.  The foods you eat in larger amounts from veggies to meat should be your top concern. All our food now is in question no matter where it comes from.

Diabetes and Blood Sugar Problems: Beneficial Herbs and Supplements

Diabetes does not just happen one day but is a gradual process that often can be turned around in the early stages. 

How do you stop diabetes in the early stages?

Diet changes and Exercise are two of the most important factors in blood sugar control. 

That means getting rid of the sugar, junk food, sodas, processed food, and high carb foods. There are books and articles on the subject. Most people know what they should not be eating, they just are unable to stop.  There are reasons you are overeating. You need to find out why you eat first. It it stress related? Is it deep seated pain from a marriage or childhood?  What feelings come up in your heart and mind when you reach for that fork? So counseling or therapy might help root that heart wound out and show you how to deal with it in more constructive way. I knew a nurse that would overeat because of horrible memories of when she was used by her parents in child porn.  You need to forgive others or yourself. Find a way to look into the mirror and see the beautiful person that is looking back at you. So these steps should come first to conquer diabetes.

Are there thyroid or endocrine problems in your family? 
Were either one of your parents very thin or suffer with weight problems?  You need to find out if endocrine problems are causing problems in your weight and health.  See an endocrinologist who is specialized in these health problems.  

If possible find one who is holistically centered in his treatment.

Are there herbs and supplements to help you conquer your blood sugar problems? 


It is important that you get help from a holistic doctor to help you use the proper amounts of these herbs and to monitor your blood sugar while doing so. 

Do not take herbs and diabetic medicine together. Herbs can affect your medication, causing a possible overdose of your diabetes medicine.  So again, you need the direction of a holistic doctor to use these herbs properly. These herbs can reduce your blood sugar to the point of causing a problem with your medicine.

He recommends starting with 200 micrograms of chromium three times per day, and then reducing the dose to twice per day if blood sugar levels improve."  Web MD

Diabetics are known to be deficient in Magnesium.

Bitter Melon (momordica charantia) (karela or karolla)
Supports healthy insulin function and the pancreas to work more effectively.
Grows in Asia, India, Africa, and South America. 

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum)

This is not your garden variety of basil found in nurseries. There are many varieties of basil of which only a few are medicinal.  Most are used in cooking.
Holy basil is used in Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes health and control.  


Fenugreek  (trigonella foenum) seeds, a folk remedy for diabetes.  

Grown in India, North Africa and the Mediterranean.  Is used in Ayurvedic medicine and is used in the cultural dishes of the areas above.
"Several studies, including one published in 1990 in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggest that this herb can lower blood sugar. Researchers found that type 1 diabetics who took 50 grams of fenugreek seed powder twice daily had significantly lower blood sugar levels than those who took a placebo." Web MD

Nopal (opuntia streptacantha)
This is the prickly-pear cactus used in Mexico to control glucose. This has been shown in some animal study research as well.  My father in law uses Nopal to control his glucose despite drinking too much and eating sugar treats when he should not.  It made quite a difference in his health.  His doctors consider him pre-diabetic. Nopal has kept him at the pre-diabetic level. I work constantly to get him to eat less sugar and eat higher quality protein.  He is very stubborn at 95.  He still plays golf and takes care of himself.  If he ate better, he would live to the early hundreds. His brother just died at 98.

Gymnema sylvestre

Another herb used in Ayurvedic medicine which grows in India.  There are many animal studies that show its ability to lower blood glucose levels, regenerate islet cells, and increase beta-cell production.


Research studies have been mixed, some showing its ability to lower glucose and some did not.  The method and quality of the cinnamon is the problem in these studies.  

Some methods of extraction and processing ruin the medicinal properties of this herb.  I doubt that most cinnamon products bought at the supermarket will have those medicinal properties. 

Spice grade is not medicinal grade.   

So if you are going to try Cinnamon, make sure you buy it as a supplement at the health food store and not in the spice section. Also spices from India have been shown to be contaminated with heavy metals and other toxins. 

There is more than one variety of cinnamon which also matters. The spice you buy may contain more than one variety of cinnamon. 

The chemical hydroxychalcone has been identified as one of the  potential active ingredients, which is believed to modify the sensitivity of cells to insulin, enhancing their uptake.  There are some recent studies that do show its benefits here at Medscape.  Take the time to read the article and research here.  This article gives you an idea of the dosage they used with the patients to achieve benefits.Check the reference links below for more information on the research and dosage.

Does Research Prove Moringa Benefits for Diabetics ?

There are research studies published on Moringa's Medicinal properties. There have many published in different countries. They are hard to find if you are not skilled in researching. I am presenting several research papers with the original links for you to read yourselves. You have to read carefully and slowly through the data is dense.

 Legally I can present you with research showing how Moringa is being shown to benefit certain health problems. 

This research presented is on Moringa and benefits for diabetes

The problem with most research studies is that Moringa leaves or pods or seeds are not given to patients in the way we would use Moringa. Those of us using Moringa are not going to get it by injection or tablets that include other factors, not pure Moringa. We are not rats. One of the studies presented is with real patients at a clinic with diabetes.  

So how much Moringa powder or fresh leaves must you eat to get the same effect? There is no clue on that because of the way the Moringa was delivered to the people and the rat subjects in these research papers.  

It is apparent by published research papers below that Moringa is beneficial for diabetic patients but how to achieve the same effects by eating the pure powder or fresh leaves is a question.  

The only way you know is by eating it, then monitoring your blood sugar on a daily basis.  Be advised that if you are taking medicine for diabetes, that you may need less of your medicine, so make sure you are monitored by a doctor while adding Moringa to your diet.  Also if you are taking medicine for high blood pressure, it could affect the amount of dosage you need. 

The blue title links will take you to the original research.  Moringa has been used for hundreds of years.  Despite the lack of research on normal human subjects in the research papers, Moringa is proven in real use by real people, who are not under lab conditions.

Moringa has been used by many thousands over the years. That is the true test, I feel about Moringa. Moringa is used in Ayurvedic medicine today. Native people use it and swear by its nutritional and health benefits. 

So for those of you who want to see some proof, here you are.  This is only a very small portion of the research.

"Moringa oleifera (MO) is an edible plant that is native to Asia and Africa but is cultivated around the world. The leaves and the seed pods are nutritious and widely consumed as food; the bark and the root are thought to have medicinal properties and are used in folk remedies. Products derived from the herb are used to treat a variety of conditions, including asthma, diabetes, ulcers, infections and cancer. Extracts from the plant are used in primitive water filtration systems to remove harmful pollutants and algae (1).

In vitro and animal studies indicate that the leaf, seed, and root extracts of MO have anticancer (3) (4), hepatoprotective (10), hypoglycemic (12), anti-inflammatory (13) (14), antibacterial (18) (19), antifungal (20), antiviral (21), and antisickling (37) effects. It may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease (29) and stomach ulcers (24), help lower cholesterol levels (25), and promote wound healing (30). In addition, MO extract has demonstrated antifertility effects (28). Only a few studies of inadequate design and/or small number have been conducted in humans (36). In one of these studies, MO did exhibit a positive but small effect on lipid profiles (38) .
MO inhibits CYP450 enzymes and may interact with prescription drugs."
Notice it is the Moringa extracts, very potent form of Moringa leaves, that showed antifertility effects. These tests for the most part were done on rats and the extract was injected not eaten normally. The dose was higher than we would get by just eating the Moringa normally. 

Evaluation of antidiabetic and antioxidant activity of Moringa oleifera in experimental diabetes.  ( the research study in full)  2011 Pub Med

Methanol extracts of the pods were used with rats who were induced with diabetes.  This is sad but the way research is done often.   This is not normal usage for Moringa pods or leaves. 

The rats were given 150 or 300 mg of this menthanol extract of the pods for 21 days.  It does not state whether it was injected or they ate it. Extracts would normally have to be injected which is not the normal way the pods are eaten.

Their conclusion,"In conclusion, M. oleifera exerts protective effects against STZ-induced diabetes. The MOMtE exhibited significant antidiabetic and antioxidant activity and active constituents may be isolated from the extract for evaluation in future clinical studies."

March 2014 issue of Acta Histochemica by Egyptian researchers 

Aqueous extracts of Moringa oleifera leaves were fed to albino rats that suffering from streptozotocin-induced diabetes

Results: "At the end of the trial, the rats that were fed Moringa extracts fared far better than the control group. Specifically, the extracts reduced their fasting plasma glucose levels from 380 percent to 145 percent (i.e. their blood sugar levels were reduced by more than 2.5 times). The extract also reduced the rats' levels of harmful malondialdehyde from 385 percent to 186 percent and increased their levels of the important antioxidant, glutathione, from 22 percent to 73 percent -- a significant improvement in all three areas.

"Experimental findings clearly indicate the potential benefits of using the aqueous extract of M. oleifera leaves as a potent antidiabetic treatment," the researchers concluded.

This is still not using Moringa leaves the way we use them.  The solutions in both studies are VERY potent because of the extracts given.

Moringa leaves were formed into tablets but were not pure Moringa.  They were then given to patients at a clinic with diabetes. The study shows exactly how the tablets were created, what was used other than Moringa leaves, and how the tablets were produced.   

There was a control group used so the study is great there.  

They were given the tablets for 90 days which is also a decent time period for the research.  

The study group were real people with diabetes not lab rats who were induced to be diabetic. The people went home and lived normal lives, not subjected to a lab environment which is not normal.    

Results:  "This reduction was highly significant, which emphasis that supplementation with drumstick leaf tablet had positive effect in reducing glycated hemoglobin. "

" Both male and female volunteers, blood glucose level had reduced after the administration of drumstick leaf tablet. It concluded that drum stick leaf tablet have a significant impact on anti diabetic property of the selected patients."

The Antidiabetic Effect of Low Doses of Moringa oleiferaLam. Seeds on Streptozotocin Induced Diabetes and Diabetic Nephropathy in Male Rats

Subjects were rats induced with diabetes.

Goal of Study: "This study aimed at testing the ameliorative effect of two low doses of Moringa seeds powder (50 and 100 mg/kg body weight) on type I diabetes and treating diabetic nephropathy of streptozotocin induced diabetic male rats."

There is detailed information on all aspects of the research such is how the rats were induced with diabetes and all the labs they ran....very dense but worth reading through. 
"his result is consistent with previous investigations [2224]. The concurrent treatment with Moringa ameliorated these parameters and nearly restored them to their normal levels. This curative effect is due to the active constituents present in Moringaseeds [2223]. The antioxidant activity of Moringa seed powder is due to its content of phenolics and flavonoids that have scavenging effect on the free radicals [2223]. Furthermore, Ghiridhari et al. [23] reported that medication with M. oleifera gives diabetic patients better glucose tolerance by increasing treatment time.M. oleifera contains three classes of phytochemicals, that is, glucosinolates such as glucomoringin, flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol, and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic acid; all of these classes have medicinal benefits [67]. These three phytochemicals of Moringa possess antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antidyslipidemic, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory properties [2527].
Treating the diabetic rats with 50 or 100 mg Moringa seeds powder/kg body weight in G3 and G4, respectively, ameliorated the levels of all these parameters approaching the negative control values and restored the normal histology of both kidney and pancreas compared with that of the diabetic positive control group in G2. This result agrees with the findings of Ndong et al. [33] and Parikh et al. [34].
The antidiabetic activity of the higher dose of Moringa seeds powder (100 mg/kg b.w.) was more efficient than that of the lower dose (50 mg/kg b.w.). This result is consistent with that of Kumbhare et al. [10] who noticed that the radical scavenging effect was found to be increased with increasing concentrations.
Treating diabetic rats with 50 mg/kg b.w. of Moringa seeds powder in G3 and 100 mg/kg b.w. in G4 restored the normal renal function and histology of kidney and pancreas with no pathological changes. This result is consistent with other findings using Moringa aqueous extract [6]. Moringa succeeded in controlling diabetic nephropathy such as other plants, for example, ginger [32], and using different materials such as ferulsinaic acid [27].
In conclusion, treated STZ induced diabetes male rats with the low doses of Moringa revealed a safe and an excellent antidiabetic activity due to its content of antioxidant compounds such as glucomoringin, phenols, and flavonoids and almost restored the diabetic rats to the normal healthy state. In addition, lower doses of Moringa under study may have greater medical benefits when used as food supplement for diabetic people’s diet."
