93 Year Old Body Builder .....His Secret for Youth

I read a wonderful story about a man today, Dr. Charles Eugster, in Britain who at 87 decided he wanted to be healthy. At 87 this retired dentist found himself overweight and his health slowly going downhill. So he joined a gym and hired a former Mr. Universe to train him.  He admits he is vane with humor. Now at 93 he can do more push ups than most of us in record time.  He says he is going after sexy 70 year old women...he wants a mate. He also wants to make sure that they know he is going to be alive for a few more years.  He works out three to four times a week.  This is pretty impressive for a man who did not start his exercise program until 87. At 87 most seniors are in wheel chairs or using a walking stick.  I have met in my life three people like him, one being a Seventh Day Adventist deacon.  Everyday he rode his bike several miles, then jumped in his pool for a lap or two.  He was 85 and had the energy and vitality of a man half his age.  You don't have to grow old and end up in a nursing home.  What are the qualities of these people?

Attitude: They are positive and think young. They see age as a blessing not an excuse to throw in the towel. They often hang out with younger people and are extremely active socially and in business. They work their mind at every opportunity. They live life to the fullest.

Laughter:  One of the factors in longevity is laughter. People who live a healthy long life know how to laugh. They know how to have fun and see the fun side of life. They laugh often and long. Comediennes like Bob Hope lived their life laughing and making others laugh right up to the time they died. Learn to see the lighter side of things. I say this as a serious German who did not know how to smile until I was grown. I was so serious even as a child, it was awful. I carried the world on my shoulders as a young child. It was not until I went to work along side a night crew shift in Alpha Beta at 21, that I learned to smile. I still have to work at the lighter side. I wish my mother who was serious as well, would have married an Irish man. His humor would have balanced out my mother's serious side. As it was, I got a double dose of serious in my personality. My husband who is always joking about everything has mellowed me. I had a short fuse for a long time at being teased. Now I even get him back at times. I no longer get upset. He has been great to balance my too-serious nature. It is healthy to laugh and joke. If you are too serious, as I was, learn to laugh. Learn how to have fun. It does not come naturally to all of us. It is important for a long healthy life. It also helps you to have more friends and to be more fun to be around. Laughter is worth cultivating!

Eating Healthy: This is so important for longevity.  You have choices....healthy or later drugs, wheelchairs, and walkers.  The longer you can avoid these options the better.  My father-in-law plays golf at 87. He only plays 9 holes at times, but he plays three times a week. It is his hobby, his life blood, and is keeping him going. Even though he drinks a bit too much, eats the wrong things at times, he overall is in better shape than most his age. He is a tough retired commander who I love.

Being Tough: This quality helps one to survive heart attacks, surgery, and other health events that would put most people in the grave or a rest home. This toughness plays out in a shorter recovery period and a better quality of life.  I have taken care of a few of them. They defy the odds, the doctors, and the insurance stats.

Physical Exercise:  It is needed to live a long, healthy life!  Even if you start older, it is better than never, always.  Physical exercise helps prevent Alzheimer's and other memory problems. Walk yourself, your neighbor, your husband, your kids, or your goats.....just walk! 

Mental Exercise: Use your brain as in cross word puzzles, games, and other activities that promote memory and brain activity.  This blog and research helps me to keep my brain sharp! My husband plays bridge online.  Whatever it takes, to get you there!

Merck Pays $220 Million In Drug Fraud Lawsuit

 How drug companies make money on your death!

 Merck is another example of how drug companies and the doctors who pimp for them, cost the lives of Americans. These companies hide research data on side effects and life threatening adverse reactions such as doubling the risk of heart attack and stroke. 

 Vioxx prescribed for arthritis was taken off the market in 2004 but has not had to pay up until now. The $220 million is only a drop in the bucket to what they made in profit off the sale of that drug.  That profit was made on the backs of people who suffered heart attacks and strokes as a side effect....deaths occurred as well.  So they were suffering from arthritis but ended up with a heart attack, stroke, or dead.  The drug doubled their risk to die!

The FDA is also responsible for people deaths as it runs these drugs through the approval system without the proper time and due diligence to make sure the drug is safe. 

How are the doctors to blame? Doctors know, these drugs time and time again are taken off the market several years later for their lethal side effects.   They receive money for pushing these drugs on you!   Many of these doctors make from $50,000 to $100,000 a year lecturing on the benefits of these drugs in medical schools and physician training seminars.

There are OTHER alternative therapies to solve health problems!

They should be sending them to a nutritionist to help them adopt a preventive approach but it is so easy instead to prescribe them drugs. 

Fraud in Drug Research is rampant and a disgrace in this country!

Drug research even when it is carried out properly is only carried for a few weeks under controlled circumstances with controlled patients.  The drugs lethal effects on the heart, kidneys, and other organs takes place over weeks or months. It slowly weakens how the organ works or it causes abnormalities in the function.  Most patients are on several drugs, often on more than one drug for the same illness. These side effects are potentated with the patient taking several drugs. Side effects on top of side effects.  These drugs also create nutritional deficiencies in the patient as well.  This in turn has an effect on the balance in the body and how the organs work. Whole systems become imbalanced with these drugs.  It is a vicious lethal-death causing cycle.  You need to understand that drugs and multiple drugs shorten your life often. They may solve one problem while creating 5 more just as serious problems. Often drugs cause personality changes including thoughts of killing yourself or others.  Almost every serial killer has been on prescription drugs for mental illness.  The drugs often make the patient worse not better. There is therapy but drug treatment is cheaper. 
Insurance companies are taking the easy way out. Doctors are taking the easy way out.....a drug versus preventive therapy and nutrition.  It is not the easy way in the long run.

I challenge you to think about what I have written in this blog. If you want to try a different approach than drugs, find a holistic doctor who can monitor your progress. Why Shade or Sun Drying Methods Are Not Effective Methods for Drying Moringa Leaves.

This question comes up a lot in emails. It is one of the most important questions you can ask.  Often a company will not tell you.  Most companies shade dry their product. This is why our product is not sun or shade dried. You need to know how your product is prepared.  This information can be researched in the book, 21st Century Greens: Leaf Vegetables in Nutrition and Sustainable Agriculture

 The author is an expert on how to dry herbs and plants to retain the most nutritional value.

Traditional Sun Drying Method Problems
There are many problems when Moringa leaves are sun dried. Chlorophyll is reduced in the process. Sun drying  destroys Vitamin A and Vitamin C levels.  Folic Acid, B1, B2 are among the nutrients lost by sun drying. That is just fact.

If it is not dried in a clean place safe from flies, gnats, bugs, and dust....you have contamination again by these elements.


 It your Moringa powder brown? It should be green.

Shade Drying Method Problems:

Shade drying takes place over a week to 10 days.

Unless the shade drying area is in a clean, enclosed building, this process may subject the leaves to bugs, rodents, animals, dust, and disease.

Even in shade drying, there is enough sunlight to destroy some Vitamin A in the leaves.

The drying over days subjects the leaves to mold, mildew, bacteria, and salmonella.  Read about is on page 85 of his book.

Unless the shelves it is dried on are properly cleaned and disinfected, each shipment could contaminate the next batch of leaves.

Shade drying offers many problems and is not the healthiest way to dry herbs or Moringa leaves.







What is the best way to dry Moringa leaves to preserve their nutrients?

In his book, he states drying should take place in a special solar oven, oven in a clean facility or house, or dehydrator under low temperatures ( less than 130 degrees) and over a short time of several hours not days.
 
Excessive heat will also kill the nutrients in the powder. Page 84 in his book. I have read this elsewhere as well.

The cleanliness of the oven is extremely important for the quality of the product. How the oven is cleaned, by what method, is one important factor.

Chemicals to clean the oven can end up in the product.

Most of the India companies have told me they shade dry their product. This buildings often are open and dirty.  

Many of the companies do not have commerical equipment and methods for washing and drying the product. 

You need to have clean conditions for holding the plant material, storing the plant material, and while drying and packaging the Moringa Leaves.  That is why most companies gamma irradiate the product before sale.

Cold Frame Worked.......fresh veggies! Duck Dilemma Solved too!




Well the first test ( 3 days of 28 degree temps) in the cold frame worked.  This is a simple wood frame with two sheets of 4mil plastic sheeting over the top. The containers of kale, tomatoes, and chard are inside. You open it from the back to water. This worked for the  past 3 days when it got down to 28 degrees. Even the professional greenhouse sheeting only gives from 4 to 8 degrees of protection.

So this did not do too bad. I got out seven nice big tomatoes from under this cold frame. The squash that was not protected did not survive the first night. I fed the stalks to the goats. 

The ends have dirt over the edges of the plastic to help keep the cold out. The Comfrey also survived and was fine.  We will see how far down, temp wise, this protects.  We get temps down to 10 degrees here and can dip lower than that. A cold frame is an extender for the season only. You must have a heated green house after a certain temperature point.  We did not get the greenhouse done so this was an alternative to see how it worked. Duck Dilemma Solved.

I built a corral with pallets around their favorite trees (they don't fly) at the end of the current chicken coop. They now have their favorite area underneath the trees to play in. At night they go through an opening into the present chicken coop where they have protection and warmth at night. I don't have to work to get them there....so they are happy and I have less work. I feel if I can give my animals quality of life...I do. In the spring when it is warm again, they will be allowed over the property to eat weeds and bugs. In Nevada right now, there is not much to forage on and the bugs including red ants are underground. They did a great job this summer, eating ants. 





Can You Guarantee Your Moringa Product Will Not Give Me a Allergic Reaction or Problem?

 I got an email this morning from someone who asked if I would guarantee my product would not cause her any allergies or intolerance problems. Would I guarantee that it was organic?  The email is below with my answer. You will get the truth here in this column...like it or not.

I will not be selling Organic Certified.  The product is on its way from the FDA lab now. It will be for sale in a week.

#1  The product I am going to be selling is not organic certified. I never said it was. The producer and his trees were visited and given a through inspection. From that inspection, the owner demonstrated that he does not use chemicals and pesticides in his growing steps. Could he at some point? Yes   
We are not there supervising his plantation. It is not my plantation.

Organically Raised but Not Organic Certified...the Reality


There are many growers who raise their products by organic standards but do not have the money, the many thousands of dollars to go through the months and hundreds of pages of paperwork and regulations. It is not worth it. So they go by the standards, but don't have the label. The hundreds of regulations and stacks of paperwork required by the health dept, the state, the federal government, and the agriculture dept make it prone to growers cheating. They have it so complex, you can't even know sometimes when you are not complying with a rule. The more complicated you make a system, the more room there is for mistakes to occur. When you have  hundreds of workers tending the plants, weeding, picking the produce, separating the good from the bad product, packaging it, .......on and on.....you cannot watch every aspect and every worker all the time.  They can cough and not wash their hands, then pick more fruit. They can be sick period and not tell the owner...they will lose work. They can miss a step in cleaning because they are tired. They can miss a step in the process, because they don't care.  Do you think you can have employees who don't make mistakes in the process of your food?  Do you think all of them care if they sneeze, they should wash their hands. I went into the restroom at Smith's market. Two women in there with me, went to the bathroom, but did not wash their hands before leaving.  Your food, no matter where it comes from, it not always safe!!!!!

Honesty in Organic Growing:


#2:  It is known that some organic producers spray their plants when no one is looking. They cheat.  So the integrity of the Organic Certification is up to the honesty and values of the people who manage their crops. There are some who are honest and some who are not. You won't know. They spray at night or at times when they know they won't get caught.  They still have an organic certificate whether they cheat or do not. You are depending on their honesty...which is NOT always deserved.  This is the blunt truth folks. Organic certified not not mean it is not contaminated with dirt, bugs, E-coli, or bug/mouse  parts.  

#3  Intolerance to foods:  This can be caused not from the food but to stomach problems, lack of digestive enzymes, and digestion Mal functions.   It is not always the food itself that is the problem.  If your digestive system is compromised as in colitis and ulcers, IBS,  and other illnesses such as cancer....you will have trouble digesting food.  


Here is the email I received below:

"Your article about how suppliers feign organic certification was very informative and I thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.  The importance of finding a source of moringa provided by trustworthy and honest people is essential to me since I have many allergies and intolerance so must be mindful of what I ingest.  Can you tell me truthfully all about your Honduran supplies and suppliers of moringa leaves, powder and seeds?
A reliable supplier of organic produce grown without the use of chemicals is what I am looking for.  If this can be guaranteed and I develop no side effects attributed to chemical fertilisers and pesticides, I would like to start buying in bulk so that I can retail it to my many friends, acquaintances and colleagues .  However; the only way that I will be able to promote a product is if I wholeheartedly know that it is organic, chemical and microbe free."

My answer to this person and to anyone else with the same question: 

xxxxxxxx, No one can guarantee with honesty any product unless they grow it themselves. It is known that even some organic certified producers, spray their crops in the middle of the night when no one knows. I know this personally after talking to an organic farm here, that knows someone who does this. You are fooling yourself, if you think that organic certified is always safe. Read my article on organic certified from India that the FDA found severely contaminated with bug parts and dirt. 

Chemicals are NOT the only problem in food.  Reactions in a food can be caused from allergies such as weeds found in the finished product. 

Reactions can occur from fillers in the product. 

Some Moringa dealers are cutting their product with grass. Its green and so is Moringa. Only a microscope can tell the difference and other tests performed on the product. 

This is a problem with all herb products.  It depends on the tests performed on the bulk to catch dust, dirt, insect parts, E-Coli, bacteria, bugs, aphids, and other contamination other than just pesticides.  You are focusing on one aspect of product contamination.  Mini- wheat's was recalled because of machinery debris in the products.  

There are many steps where the product can be contaminated....in each step from growth to final packaging. 

 

Important Factors To Read About My  Honduran Product:

I can tell you that the product I will be selling has been tested for contamination and bottled in an FDA lab that is GMP compliant. 

Someone did visit his plantation and tour his facilities that I know who has other business down there.

From that inspection, it was demonstrated  that he does not use chemicals on his trees or artificial fertilizers.  We cannot guarantee that because we are not down there supervising his operation all the time.   It is not our operation and we are not managing that. 

No one else could guarantee that either unless they personally supervised the operation. If you want guarantees, I will not give you those. If someone else does, I would doubt that unless it is their own operation and they are supervising it.  

To order wholesale you must have a resale license and a business....that is the law here in the US.  Ordering for your family and others does not constitute a business.  You must have a resale certificate. I tell anyone who writes the same thing.  I have not said that I will be selling organic certified. I have had the product checked out, the bulk was originally tested for quality, it is tested for contamination and bottled in the US by a GMP compliant lab.

A last note, no matter how good a product is, you can have allergies to it.  I worked for an allergist years ago.  I would state that no company can guarantee you won't have an allergy or reaction to a product.....it is not possible.

Winter Temps Are Here- Growing Moringa In the House Update


The largest of the Moringa Trees that are not in 33 gal containers in the laundry room/green house experiment. I trimmed them this week as well.  There are more by another window in this room.


Well Tuesday marks the first predicted freeze. It will freeze three days in a row. This is about the time is happened last year as well.  There is a lot here to do in Nevada to prepare for winter. . In the summer here you must open up the chicken and rabbit house so that it does not get too hot.  Now today we had to go in and make it warmer for the animals. I treat my livestock well.  I sleep better at night knowing they are well taken care of.

The goats get a heating element attached to their metal water trough. It keeps the water from freezing. Last year, it did not run up the electric bill much.  They also have a stall with warm hay inside. 

The rabbits have a big shed plus fenced outside area. Inside the shed is two dog houses for the cold nights. They also have angora coats to keep them warm. 

The rabbits and chickens get heated water bowls. I do have heat lamps if we have a severe winter
 
 The chicken house was originally designed as a green house, so the chickens have a great house for the winter. The building was then turned into a shed. It is ideal because it has light that comes in through the roof, heavy wood walls, a window or two in the sides that can be opened or closed depending on the time of year.  The door going into it does not however have a hinged door.  So I rigged up a heavy duty tarp across the door opening with some room for them to go in at the bottom. This is taken off in the summer, to cool it down. Their roost has hay to help keep their feet warm. 

The only ones not taken care of yet is the ducks. They roam the property and hang out under some trees. I built them an enclosure which they seem to be afraid of. They don't want to be confined even it its warmer in there.  We will see when the cold hits on Tuesday if they will use it or not. The only other solution is running them into the chicken coop. I have tried that several evenings but they split up in one than one direction. Since I am alone with Marty gone at work when it gets dark.....that does not get them in.  Originally they would go in by themselves but have decided they don't want to be penned in. There are 20 of them to herd in. They have eaten the weeds, the bugs, and have been invaluable to keep the area weed free. The chickens help too.  Their water enriched with duck do, is dumped underneath the elm trees every day. Those particular elm trees grew the fastest. They were half dead when we moved here because the house had been vacant for a long time. The duck water also was great for the garden. Diluted it never burned the plants.  So we still have a duck dilemma until I figure it out.

The Moringa Experiment......

I have observed that the Moringa trees in our spare bedroom-laundry room are still growing slowing. I have also noticed it is warmer there and is getting some sun. So we moved all but the 33 gal Moringa trees into that room.  I set up a humidifier and heater set to 70 degrees. This room can more easily be heated and filled with moist warm air.  We also brought in the two patio tomatoes with a ton of green tomatoes on them. At least we can keep the plants alive until the current fruit gets ripe.  I hope this experiment will show, that I can keep the Moringa trees growing, even if it is slowly all winter. The ones in the laundry room have not gone dormant. They will also get the warmth from the dryer and the wall heater which serves the office, bedroom, and laundry room. There is one in the living room under the grow lights that is still growing as well.  The biggest ones, are  so tall, it makes it difficult to put a grow light on. There are so very heavy that my husband and I cannot move them by ourselves. Originally we paid two big strong kids to move them in from the U Hall.  When you take 33 gallon trash cans then fill them with potting soil, you have a lot of weight. They may just have to stay where they are. It gets sun but will be hard to heat. There is no central heater in the living room.

So we will see how this works. I have about 10 trees from babies to several 3 footers in the laundry room.

I hope by next year to have enough experience growing them in cold areas, to be able to give you more concrete advice. I am still experimenting to see what will work and what will not.  A greenhouse, unless it is heated, will not keep them from freezing in very cold areas. In mild areas like Southern California  you may get away without heat.  The cold winds which started back up here today, will also destroy the trees.  I see them as a survival tree and so to me it is important to figure out how to keep them going through the winter. One woman suggested Christmas led lights around the trees. That is an interesting idea since the Christmas season is almost here. That is not going to save them outside in cold areas. 

So will show you pictures as we go along.  This will be a long winter. On the plus side, we moved here to Stagecoach from Mina....which mostly had disadvantages. There is beauty here in Stagecoach with a million dollar view of the mountains. The area is cheap to live in, inexpensive water, close to civilization if you need it, and we have over an acre of land to our self.  We pay for a house and land, what many are paying for a one bedroom apt in some cases.  This house is $600 for over 1800 sq feet and it is in good shape with a new roof....there are reasons to live in the remoter areas. The neighbors are five star as well.  Our pet sitter lives on one side of our property and will milk the goats later, if we needed to be gone....We are greatly blessed this year!

Help- My Moringa Tree Seems to Be Dying

These are not this years trees. These are the originals from California, then taken to Nevada. They did well until they froze.   These trees were also much older...two years....so they were much, much bigger.

This is in answer to an email I got.  Your Moringa may be dying but more likely it is shutting down for the year. Unless you live in Florida or Hawaii, your weather is cooling down. They thrive and grow at temperatures over 70 degrees min.  Mine are hardly growing here with the temps at night down to 40. I have a few with leaves that are finished. I have two or three growing a little.  Even to grow them in the house, you must have sunlight or grow lights. You must have the house warm.

Other Factors:   Is the tree soil too wet? They HATE soggy soil and wet roots.  You can kill them easily giving them too much water.

Sunlight:  They have to have sunlight to grow well.  Grow lights is the only other option.

Temperature:  Moringa is a tropical tree that normally grows in places like the the Philipines, Asia, Africa.  They don't like winter....temps under 70 degrees. They freeze and die.  Above freezing they go dormant, look dead, but are not.  It will take the warmth of summer for them to start growing again. Do not give up on them because they look dead. If the root ball is firm, they should come out of it. If the the root ball is soggy, mushy....they rotted.

Humidity: They grow better in more humid areas. We live in Nevada with no immunity and so that is a problem.

Container:  Keep them in a small container and they will die. They are a tree and need at least a 20 gal container for best results. One gallon or 5 gal containers will not hold them happily after they are three feet tall.  They have a deep, large root system. The container is better that is deeper rather than wider. Make sure the container drains well. Make sure the soil drains well. Clay soil that holds water will kill the tree. Drainage....drainage.....keep that on the top of your list for factors.

Mulch: Wet mulch will rot the root. Believe me I learned that the hard way. Mulching them in the winter in wet areas, keeps the mulch wet over the rootball....it rots.

Wrapping the Bark:   Do not wrap the trunk to keep it from freezing. It rots the bark underneath. I tried that as well and it does not work.

Fertilizer: they love organic stuff not Miracle Grow.   Give them rich organic fertilizer.

White Spots on leaves: They are telling you they are not getting their ideal environment.  

If you raising them anywhere but Florida, Hawaii, Southern California.....you may get failure to thrive problems.  You will just have to experiment with your area and climate on raising them.  It is not easy. This is our first year of growing them totally in the house. The experiment here in Nevada is not done. We have winter to go through.  I have to see how they come back up next year.  Right now mine are shutting down....
