Comfrey is important to my goal of raising our rabbits and chickens as naturally as possible. Once all the greens are up and growing well, the Comfrey, Kudzu, Plantain, Kale, Swiss Chard, and sour dock will all go toward the animals natural feed. Comfrey is used for animal fodder in many parts of the world. It has beautiful purple flowers. Goats, rabbits, chickens, horses, and cattle will all benefit from eating Comfrey leaves. It is planted as a permanent crop that is cut several times a year. Growing Comfrey versus soybeans will give you 20 times the protein, acre for acre. It contains far more nutrition than hay and better for them. You can plant them in the pasture or in an area dedicated to Comfrey production.

- Add 5 pounds of Comfrey leaves into about 7 gallons of water.
- If you want a lot of fertilizer, use a 55 gallon barrel or 33 gal trash can with a proportional amount of leaves.
- Cover the mixture with a lid and let ferment for 4-6 weeks. The liquid gold is then used to fertilize your plants. You can also place Comfrey leaves in your planting holes to give them a Comfrey growth boost.
- The best Comfrey to grow is Bocking #4 which is more drought resistant, more durable, more frost tolerant, more heat tolerant, and has a better taste for your livestock. It is the best Comfrey strain to plant as animal fodder. It is called Symphytum peregrinum, Quaker comfrey, Russian or American Comfrey. It divides itself but is not invasive.
It is very cold tolerant...the perennial roots are hardy to minus 40 degrees (-40)! The leaves can withstand temperatures as low as 15 degrees and still survive. So Comfrey can be grown in any climate whether you have a small garden or 17 acres like we have.
Comfrey is also heat tolerant, even to 120 degrees. Its roots grow down into the soil to a depth of 8-10 feet to find the available water supply. The best growing zones are USDA Zones 2-9. The Comfrey leaves will begin growing in early spring and continue on into the end of fall or the the first frosts and snow.
