Is Our Food Safe to Eat In America?

Often, readers email or call me on the safety of eating Moringa leaves from other countries. This is an important and valid question to ask but do you really think our own food supply here, produced in America, is safe? No, it is not. If you think so, you are just hiding your head in the sand. Here is an article from today which did not end up on front page news. Too bad.

CHINO, Calif. (AP) — The owners of a Southern California slaughterhouse whose workers were caught on videotape abusing cattle, leading to one of the nation's biggest beef recalls, have agreed to pay more than $300,000 to settle a lawsuit.
The Los Angeles Times reports ( ) Donald Hallmark Sr. and Donald Hallmark Jr. also agreed to a nominal $497-million judgment against the now-defunct Hallmark Meat Packing Co., which will not be collected because the company is bankrupt.
The Hallmarks were two of nine defendants in a federal False Claims Act suit brought by the Humane Society of the United States.
The government recalled 143 million pounds of beef in 2008 after the Humane Society released video from the Chino plant showing cows too sick or injured to stand being dragged with chains and rammed with a forklift.

Years ago I went with a rancher friend to a  livestock auction.  I watched them unload cattle that were in shock from the ride. One would not get up, it was too weak. They then shocked it with an electric prod. It still couldn't get up so they kept prodding it until it died right on the spot. I threw up, I was so upset. I saw calves, that were sick and weak, underweight in the pens outside as well. I never went to another livestock auction again.

When my children were little, we lived up the road from a chicken ranch. I went in there to ask a question, and saw dead chickens in some of the cages. I saw sick chickens that were half dead as well. That is when I first made the decision to raise my own chickens and eggs. Most of the years since, I have done just that. So I have seen first hand what most of you have not. Most consumers do not really want to know how their food it raised. They want to assume that it is raised in reasonable conditions. Reasonable to whom? Certainly not to the animal shoved into a tiny cage, unable to move or turn.  It is not the meat I feel is bad for you, but the conditions they are raised in, that makes it bad for you. We eat little red meat, because of that. At 61 and 65, raising our own beef is too much work for us.

The government recalled 143 million pounds of beef from this company. This was not the first time, nor will it be the last time that beef, chicken, or some other food will be recalled.  They sold beef for months or years under these circumstances before being caught. You really never know what you eating and its quality....that is the real reality. If it is not cruel living conditions, it is what they are feeding the cattle along with added antibiotics, hormones, and other medicines.

The only real way to know what you are eating is to raise it yourself. Most people cannot do that.  You can hope that the organic meat you are paying a huge price for is really raised as they state on the package. It is sad that we do not really know the state of the food we eat, we only assume with hope that it won't make us sick.

I really want you to consider growing as much food as you can in your back yard, or on your patio.  How great is it to know that the spinach you picked from your own garden, was picked with clean hands, washed properly, and prepared properly. Every tomato, pepper, squash, or bean that you grow, you know where it came from.  Gardening does take effort and work but the rewards are amazing. We brought our tomatoes in the house, so we could reap the remaining tomatoes for at least this month. They were all still green at the first freeze forecast, so in the house they went. . Here in the house, they have ripened into beautiful, delicious red beauties.

The cold frame is still protecting the kale and Swiss chard.  I know all of you are busy but think about what you can do, you grow a few veggies for your family. If you can, raise a few chickens or ducks. My ducks are laying now. I am not sure why at this time but I am happy with their gifts. I love duck eggs with their rich yolk and white. I only have to eat one duck egg, rather than two chicken eggs. Our eggs do cost more than cheap store bought eggs, but I know they come from healthy, free range chickens that are fed and raised properly with love.  Their are now many cities that now allow you to have up to 4 chickens in your back yard. It is well worth the time and effort.

On the subject of meat, we buy organic raised meat from neighborhood farms. I know most of the people that I buy from. I have been on their farms and seen the way they treat their animals. If you can, buy from a local farmer's market. The smaller farms generally treat their livestock better than the huge farms with many thousands of chickens or cattle. One of the reasons, I will not eat lamb or veal is because of the horrible way they are raised. I long ago saw it first hand and determined I would not support an industry that treats animals that way.  I have raised my own chickens for most of the years. We also raise rabbits as well.  My rabbits have a house for warmth and a yard to play in.  I raise them to provide quality manure for my garden. This year I will breed them, and some of babies will go to meat.  I do believe in self sufficiency when possible. Times are coming where all of us will need those skills.

All for now, Kate Freer, the herbladyisin

This is the two brands I trust because they test their imported products for contamination, E-Coli, and heavy metals in a US lab.  I have now been using a number of their products for over two years including Moringa powder. DO NOT buy Moringa products unless the company states that they test for heavy metals and contamination. If you do you are risking your health. Organic certified can still contain E-coli, dirt, bugs, weeds, filth and insects.  This is the way it is folks.

Traditional Uses for Moringa Leaves, Flowers, Pods, Seeds, Bark, and Roots

Today's blog is on how Moringa is used in Ayurvedic medicine and by native people in countries such as India.  I need to interject that this blog is for education only. This information is not intended to prescribe, diagnose, or treat illness.

For Moringa Leaves , Pods, and Flowers In India, the Philipines, and other Asian nations.

In India,  Moringa leaves made into a juice is used to help stabilize blood pressure and in the treatment of stress and anxiety.  Again the exceptional nutrition in Moringa leaves supports the healthy function of each organ and body system.

Leaves are also used in India to treat fevers, bronchitis, eye and ear infections, scurvy and catarrh which if the inflammation of the mucus membranes. Poor nutrition contributes to a weak immune function. If you give the body the proper nutrition, your body's immune system will have the tools to fight off the invading virus or bacteria.

It is a faulty immune system that is at fault when we become ill. We are constantly being exposed to germs and viruses that could cause us to be sick. We do not get sick when our immune function is working properly.

Mixed with honey and followed by a drink of coconut milk 2 to 3 times a day, the leaves are used by the native people as a remedy for diarrhea, dysentery, and inflammation of the colon.

Leaf juice added with carrot juice is used to promote the flow of urine.

Leaves are given to nursing mothers to increase the flow and quality of breast milk and to treat anemia in mothers. It is one of the few plants that contain a high iron content.

In Senegal, the leaf juice is made into an infusion and used to help support healthy glucose levels in Diabetes.

Leaf juice alone and in combination with carrot juice is used as a diuretic ( increases the flow of urine)

Moringa is used in certain projects to improve nutrition for mothers and babies whose health and life are compromised by famine and starvation.  It is used because of its exceptional nutritional qualities including protein, Calcium, iron, and all of the essential amino acids.

AIDS is one of the diseases that is wiping out a whole generation.  The superior nutrition of Moringa leaves helps support the AIDS patient's weakened body and immune system.  The easily digested and utilized nutrition in Moringa leaves helps them to gain strength back to fight the secondary infections that prey on the AIDS patient.

Moringa leaves are used by physicians in India to support a balanced blood sugar level, a balanced blood pressure and overall health.

An extract made from the dried, powdered leaves has been shown in research to result in significant muscle relaxation, decreased body temperature, and increased sleep time.

Flowers are used as a tonic, diuretic, and abortifacient so should not be used by pregnant women. In Ayurvedic medicine, the flowers are considered to be anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, and used to slow down tumor growth.

In India doctors press the flowers and use the juice to soothe sore throats and catarrh.

In Puerto Rico, the flowers are made into an infusion for eye irritations.

Pods are used in Ayurvedic medicine for liver and spleen imbalance; also for joint pain. Pods are also used in Indo-China for these same problems.  The roots ae pounded, made into a poultice over the joint area that is hurting.  The root is sometimes mixed with rum as a liniment.

Roots are used in India as a laxative, chewed to relieve cold symptoms and fever.

The root and stem bark is used in Senegal to treat sores and skin infections; a decoction of the root bark, roots, leaves, and flowers is used to treat epilepsy, hysteria, and intestinal spams. In India it is used as a digestive agent;
In India, the root bark is used for enlargement of the spleen, tumors, ulcers

Flowers, leaves, and roots are used for various tumors and the seeds for stomach tumors.

The seed oil is applied externally to relieve pain and swelling in the case of gout, rheumatism, and in skin diseases.

As you can see every part of the Moringa tree is used for either food or medicine. You need to research this further online if you are interested. My main purpose is to give you an idea of how people in the past and present are using this tree, his leaves, flowers, seeds, bark, and root in their everyday life. They are the experts on Moringa's healing abilities.

There are pages on the various ways that Moringa leaves, flowers, leaves, bark, and roots are being used by people in different parts of the world. If you have neighbors that came the Philippines, they will be able to give you some excellent first hand knowledge. I encourage readers who have grown up using Moringa to leave comments on how they use it in their family culture.

Research studies will never be as true as is the ages old use of this trees.  If an herb  does not work over time, people will abandon its use for that health problem. If it works, they will continue to use it over hundreds or thousands of years.  Real usage by the people is the ultimate research study which takes place over hundreds of years.

Moringa / Beef Quckie Meal

I like simple meals and sometimes I just throw things together. This came out delicious. To answer your question, we are not vegetarian. Meat is eaten in our family sparingly. Red meat less often than chicken and fish.  If you are vegetarian, substitute the meat for Tofu.

3 cups washed Moringa leaves
1 cup cooked  organic ground beef (this should work with cut up chicken too)
1 cup water
1 cup stewed tomatoes
1/2 cup green peppers
2 T. Olive oil
1 tsp. minced garlic or more
salt to flavor
dash of pepper
1 sliced red or brown onion

Saute garlic, onion, peppers, and tomatoes in a frying pan. Add ground beef.  Drain excess oil.  Add water then simmer for a few minutes over low heat. Season with salt and pepper. Add Moringa leaves the last 5 minutes. Serve over rice or pasta.
This is easy, quick and inexpensive to make.

Serve with a salad topped with more Moringa leaves.

Good night all! Kate Freer

Is Moringa a Good Source for Calicum? Answers to Some Calcium Questions.

Today's subject is important. Calcium is one of the minerals that is super important to your health. There are factors you may not be aware of that influence your uptake of Calcium.  You should also understand how taking Moringa powder fits into your daily Calcium needs.

The Different Kinds of Calcium:  Your body has to break it down to use it.

What does Elemental Calcium mean on the label and why is it important?
This is the calcium that is actually absorbed by your bones, muscles and other tissues. Not all calcium forms contain the same amount of elemental calcium.  Make sure the label states the elemental calcium, as well as the total calcium in the supplement.

Magnesium and Vitamin D are needed for your body to break down the calcium. A good supplement will include these two factors.

Tablet, Capsule, or Chewable: It has been shown that many people do not break down tablets. Tablets are cheaper but harder to absorb. Capsules contain the powder that is more easily utilized.  Chewables are more easily absorbed depending on the other ingredients and the type of calcium in the chewable.

Oyster Shell:  One of the cheapest but worst forms of calcium to take. Made from Oyster Shell; extremely hard to utilize because it needs a lot of stomach acid to break it down.  Oyster Shell, dolomite, and bone meal have all been found to contain toxins including lead.

Calcium Carbonate:  a mineral or salt found in most OTC antacids. It absorbs best when taken with breakfast and with a low iron meal. It also needs a lot of stomach acid to break it down. It is absorbed better when taken several times a day. Can cause constipation. It contains 40% elemental calcium but is inadequately absorbed by many individuals. Again, if your stomach is not digesting properly, you have low stomach acid, or over 50, or have any number of health problems that affect your stomach, this is not the best form of calcium to take.

Calcium Citrate: is more easily absorbed and does not take as much stomach acid to break it down. Take with food or on an empty stomach. It is a better choice for most people.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite  One of the highest absorbed calcium supplements but more expensive.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite, or CH, is made by processing young bovine bone without the use of heat or chemicals. Because of this, it retains all of the bone minerals and residues and keeps them intact and in their original, natural physiological ratios. Amino acids, collagen, and mucopolysaccarides which would normally be lost during the manufacturing process, contribute to the desirable levels of calcium absorption into the bones.

CH also contains healthy doses of potassium, boron, zinc, magnesium, and chromium to aide in its effectiveness. To assist with reversing bone loss, CH also contains gel-like matter, proteoglycans, which assist in the filling of bone matter and help transfer minerals throughout the bone tissue.

It is so effective that this substance is now used in the creation of many bone implants, and in some cases, physicians may make a spreadable paste out of it and use it to directly repair bones. Because it has a porous surface, it lends itself to adhering to the already present bone, and will eventually begin to grow on its own.

Best absorbed when taken with food. Do not take more than the suggested dosage since it is absorbed at a higher rate than the other forms above. It is best to take the supplement 2 hours before taking iron supplements. Be aware of prescription medication warnings and calcium.

Interactions: Calcium may bind to antibiotics, iron supplements, blood pressure medicine, synthetic thyroid hormones, bisphophonates, calcium channel blockers,  and other prescription medicines making them less effective. Read your prescription labels carefully.

Calcium in Foods:

  • Dairy products, such as cheese, milk and yogurt
  • Dark green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli and kale
  • Fish with edible soft bones, such as sardines and canned salmon
  • Calcium-fortified foods and beverages, cereal and fruit juices

Moringa Leaves:   Highly absorbed calcium.

The dried Moringa leaves contain 17 times the calcium of milk.

The Fresh leaves contain 4 times the calcium of milk. Drying the leaves increases its nutrient value other than Vitamin C.

It contains Vitamin A as well. The high protein, iron, antioxidants, and amino acids all help to build up the mother's health.

Moringa is used in projects in third world countries to supplement the diet of women who are pregnant and nursing their babies. It has been shown to increase lactation and the quality of the milk.

Women are given Moringa to increase their nutritional diet while pregnant. In these countries thousands of babies are dying from malnutrition.  They are born underweight with health problems due to the mother's poor health. Often the babies die within the first two years.

Often in these countries, the native people do not know the nutritional value of the Moringa tree until shown. It is growing right in their yard, but they have no idea to eat it. In other countries, it is a basic part of diet, eaten everyday in various dishes.

I make Moringa Goat's milk and it goes in my yogurt as well. There are numerous ways to supplement different foods with Moringa powder. Go to my website here for more ways to use Moringa leaves and the Moringa leaf powder Here

It is suggested to supplement your diet with two to four capsules per day.  Three capsules equal a teaspoon. I just take the capsules apart and use them in whatever dish I am cooking.

I hope this has helped. All for now. Thank you for reading my blogs...I appreciate you.

Why Moringa Should Be At the Top Of Your Emergency List of Supplies

Today, after several days of 15 degree weather, it was warmer. It was a good day to peak under the plastic on the cold frame outside.  The Swiss Chard and Kale still look beautiful.  The one tomato looked sad but still alive. The Comfrey did well too.  So next year I will plant more beds of all of them.  It was extremely successful considering we did not get the green house up as planned.  Will keep you posted as the winter goes through its cycle.

Our Very Simple Cold Frame with 3 layers of 4mil plastic sheeting

With the political scene the way it is, I would suggest all of you put in a garden in Spring. If you only have a small area, plant in containers on your porch or patio. The news all state that because of the drought and other problems, food costs are going to accelerate.  You don't have to plant acres of crops but you can plant enough to get well. There are whole sites on how to garden living in the city whether it be an apartment or  condo. Start investigating and planning for Spring.

There is a lot of weird weather going on so keeping emergency supplies on hand, should be an important effort for every family. Even if you don't have dangerous weather like Sandy, you could find yourself out of work. That store of food might come in real handy in a hard time. Make a list of foods and other supplies you would need, then each month buy something on the emergency list.

Moringa is an important food to have on hand during emergencies. The leaf powder is considered a survival food containing Protein, Iron, Calcium, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, 46 antioxidants, and all needed amino acids. It is extremely dense in its nutritional quality. Of the many foods on your list, Moringa powder should be in the top. I would have on hand two bottles per person in your family for each month or more. I would have enough on hand for three months, as your other emergency foods. It is something simple you can do that could really help to keep you healthy over time. Many of the foods in those emergency packs do not contain the antioxidants and nutrition that Moringa powder does. In our emergency pack we bought, there are a lot of soup packets. Those packets do not contain  complete nutrition by any means. Vitamin C is one of the nutrients missing.

Personal care items that you need daily should be listed as well. Simple things like toothpaste or denture supplies. Go to the dollar store where you can buy them for cheap. Depending on the dollar store, you can find items such as triple antibiotic, band-aids, bandage supplies, shampoo, and much more. It may not be the brand you normally buy but sure works fine in an emergency. Any items you use every day should be included in your supplies.

Water is another item that should be at the top of your priority list. It is amazing how much water is used to wash with, to cook with, and to flush the toilet.  We once lived on property with a well. The pump went out and it was a week before it was fixed. We had to haul in water for the animals, for us, and to flush with.  Here is this area of Nevada, we have been told by the neighbors that every summer, the lightening or winds blow down power lines. He has had to use his generator several times.  You just never know these days what's in store. So please if you have not, get that emergency list going. There is never a wrong time to start, unless you knee deep in water.

Think about how your family would do with no electricity. How would you cook? How would you light the house? How would you keep warm. I have a solar oven, solar flash lights, candles, and a wood stove in the living room. How does your family score up on emergency preparations? If you failed, you need to correct that situation. I hope this blog has given you some food for thought. I do hope after thinking on this subject, you make the steps to make your family safer.
