Warning !!!!!! Why The FDA is Still A Huge Threat To Alternative Medicine and Moringa

I am reprinting this News Release so that you understand that we are still in a war with the FDA and its overreach of  power.  We may have won a small battle, but the big battle is still ahead.

Why is the FDA a threat to Moringa Leaves?  In India and many other countries, Moringa is used to prevent and treat diseases such as high blood pressure and diabetes. Along with being a Super Packed food that you can eat every day, it has many properties that help support organs and body systems. This means that it has the ability to work with the body's own healing systems to normalize systems such as your blood pressure.  This makes it a danger to the FDA and the drug companies.

Why would the FDA want you to use Moringa leaves when they are making millions of dollars off of prescribing you drugs that cost a fortune and ruin your kidneys and liver. Moringa is a danger to the powerful, destructive drugs out there.  You would not need most of them if you ate better, exercised, and brought down your stress level.

You need to be aware of what the FDA is trying to do and become active in stopping them. Your letters and calls let them know that we do not want their NDI Guidance laws. We have all the laws we need, and many we don't to supervise alternative medicine.

Take part in saving this nation from what has already happened in Europe and England. Right now there, most herbs are by prescription only and cost a fortune.  How many of your doctors know anything about alternative medicine but they will be the ones prescribing them to you.  For the thousands who do not have coverage, it will make it so you will not have access to them or if you a high cost.   Our rights are being taken over everyday, and people don't even know it.

In California, right now, your child can be taken in by the school nurse and given vaccinations without your approval.  Many people who voted for Jerry Brown, don't even have a clue he put this into law. I have talked to several on the issue.  Laws that take away our freedoms are passed quietly on a weekend, when everyone is at the beach.  They are signed into law  right under your noses.

Listen up folks, for if you don't start getting involved, you will lose America, as we know it now.   If you think I am being too harsh, I am not...I am trying to rattle those of you who are too busy to pay attention to what is going on in this country.

          The decision of the FDA has not been officially announced, but Senate staff confirms that Senators Tom Harkin, and Orrin Hatch were informed in a personal meeting on June 19th with FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and Deputy Commissioner Mike Taylor that a revision may be attempted in the future. The NPA and several others immediately sent out news releases claiming it as their victory while also applauding this FDA reconsideration; but the National Health Federation and other health-freedom organizations are not applauding for several reasons:
  • Let’s Not Applaud the FDA for Doing What They Should Have Done Years Ago.  We all knew the FDA had this card to play. Amazingly, one industry association is proclaiming that “This action by the FDA shows that they are committed to an open dialogue” and that the FDA will be releasing a revised draft guidance that “the agency hopes will provide greater clarity and address concerns that the document is not in line with the intent of the DSHEA statute.” Really! So where has the FDA dialogue  been for the past 17 years on issuing a Guidance? Why weren’t supplement stakeholders, industry, and consumers consulted in the first place before the July 2011 Guidance was issued?
  • This is No Time to Beg for Crumbs.  With the backlash the FDA received from consumers, manufacturers, health-stores, and supplement manufacturers after its incredibly off-the-wall July 2011 draft Guidance came out, this option of revision (no matter how small the revisions), was anticipated by the NHF. This was exactly why the Federation came out with H.R.3380 legislation in August 2011, so that we would not have to beg for “crumbs” from the FDA during its (if any) revisions.  H.R.3380, the Dietary Supplement Protection Act (DSPA) introduced by Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN), moves the defining date of October 15, 1994 (separating “old” supplements from “new” ones), to a more realistic and recent date of January 1, 2007. By this one simple act, the Bill encompasses within that previous grandfathering clause all of the “new” dietary-supplement ingredients that have appeared in that 13-year interval and that would otherwise be subject to the onerous requirements of the FDA Guidance.  The bill drastically narrows the arbitrary power the FDA wants to exercise over new supplements and thereby protects thousands of supplements that have been safely consumed from being removed from the marketplace.
  • The Industry Historically Loses at the Negotiating Table.  Typically, the FDA wins over health freedom whenever there are simply negotiations between it and the industry or between it and consumers.  Do we really expect it to be any different this time?  How many times do we have to be slapped in the face before we realize that we will be slapped yet again?  Make no mistake about it: The FDA’s goal is to usurp our health rights as they have continuously done for decades.  The FDA at revision time is still ignoring the true intent of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA).  Any revisions to the draft Guidance will just be cosmetic changes. More lipstick!  Every time we let the FDA do this to us, we set a precedent and their strength gets stronger and ours weaker.  In the Federation’s comments submitted to the FDA in December 2011 (found here) about the July draft Guidance, we urged the FDA to withdraw the Guidance.  We knew the odds of this actually happening were slim as the Guidance is nothing more than the FDA’s further efforts to help its  pharmaceutical-industry friends by squelching supplements and the competitive threat they pose to drugs.
  • The Regal FDA Has Thrown Us a Crumb and Industry Cheers. This latest development sets the stage for the continuation of regulatory misinterpretation, confusion, and misguided enforcement by the FDA. H.R.3380 is a longer-term solution to effectively addressing these issues – not a band-aid or begging with hat-in-hand approach.  It also keeps the pressure right where it belongs – on the FDA.
  • It’s Way Too Early to Announce Victory.  What is now being touted as a “monumental breakthrough” in FDA cooperation is in reality just the old Washington cliché’ of “you are either at the table or on the menu” with an out-of-control FDA bureaucratic and Federal government anti-individual liberty philosophy at play. More importantly, being “at the table” ensures that you can also have your seat at the table pulled out from under you and wind up as the entrée anyway. For example, the FDA announcement singled out the issue of establishing an agreed-upon list of “grandfathered ingredients” as an area where the FDA would like to “begin working with industry” to resolve. Industry has already admitted that the records of ingredients on the market before 1994 no longer exist. Supplements and their ingredients on the market before October 15, 1994 were “grandfathered in” by DSHEA and therefore exempted from having to prove in any way that they are safe.  So what happens when agreement is not reached with the FDA in these upcoming talks? Obviously, the FDA position is that these new dietary ingredients will have to be removed from sale to Americans until they  have been “proven” safe to consume. We lose, not the FDA.
  • We Still Need to Keep The Pressure On FDA.  Recently, the FDA decision to send out warning letters to ten companies with “new” dietary ingredients, even though the draft Guidance had not even yet been finalized, is just another example of why our Dietary Supplement Protection Act (H.R.3380) is needed and needed now.  Just hoping that negotiations with the FDA will produce tangible results is foolish.  Even attorney Jonathan Emord has acknowledged that “substantial changes are rare” on the part of the FDA.  Pressure must be kept on the FDA.
          The Federation asks that true supporters of health freedom not settle for FDA crumbs during the revision time (and who knows how many years that will be?), but support H.R.3380 and request that your Representative co-sponsor our Bill.  This does not mean that Industry should not talk with the FDA, only that it should do so from a position of strength and not weakness.
          We sincerely hope that talks with the FDA will produce results, but does anyone really think that they can trust the good intentions of the FDA? As NHF President Scott Tips says, “To pin all of our hopes on the good graces and good will of the FDA is the height of folly.  If they had such good will, then where were they for the last 17 years?  In fact, where were they in ‘listening to the Industry and consumers’ prior to drafting their Guidance on NDIs?   Nowhere.  They were MIA. And so, now, just because they have thrown us a scrap, we are to believe that they have suddenly seen the light?  Are we really that gullible?
          The Federation wants more than revisions to this draft Guidance and we don’t want to settle.  Remember, as we’ve always said, “politicians don’t see the light, they only feel the heat.”  It’s time to renew the pressure on the FDA by passing the Dietary Supplement Protection Act (H.R.3380).  Contrary to rumors, H.R.3380 can pass.  Keep up the pressure!

Cooking with Moringa Pods

A reader this morning asked me how to use the Moringa Pods in cooking.  Here is some general information on how to use the seed pods:

Green Pods:

The young green pods can be prepared as you do green beans.  They taste similar to Asparagus. You can cook them this way when they emerge from the flower until they become tough to snap easily.

The young seeds  ( and the soft pulp) are scraped out with a spoon. The seeds and pulp need to be washed well to remove the bitter film that coats them.  The seeds at this young stage of growth look like large peas. They are then put into water and brought to a boil. Continue cooking until the seeds are soft. Season them and serve hot.

You can cut the pods in one inch pieces, adding butter, onions, and salt. Boil until tender.

Steam the pods, no seasoning, then marinade in a mix of oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, garlic, and parsley.

Make soup by boiling the cut pods with lots of onion until tender. Milk is then added. This mixture is allowed to thicken, like you would do to make asparagus soup.  Then add your favorite seasonings.

Make Moringa Split pea soup with the young green seeds.

Older Pods:   The seeds will look brown now. They are fried on top of the stove until crisp. They will have a peanut like flavor.

Breaking News: We Win Major Concession on New Supplement Guidance

We have pointed out for months that the FDA’s NDI (new supplement) guidance threatens our access to supplements and indeed could destroy the industry, leaving drugs with a total monopoly.

After adamantly digging in its heals and refusing to reconsider, FDA has now at last agreed that the draft NDI guidance requires substantial revision. This follows a meeting between FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg and Mike Taylor, Deputy Commissioner of Foods, with Senators Harkin and Hatch, longtime champions of natural health.

According to our sources, the FDA stated in the meeting that the guidance would be revised to account for the numerous comments and concerns, and released in draft form once again, which will then be open for public comment. This is exactly what we asked for!

The FDA’s decision is a dramatic reversal of the position taken in an earlier meeting with the Senators’ representatives, in which they adamantly refused this very same request. While we may never know how or why the FDA changed their position, it is very likely that they were responding to our sustained public messages opposing the current NDI draft guidance.

ANH-USA has also been working closely with the Appropriations Committee that controls the FDA’s purse strings. We recently helped secure report language in the Appropriations Committee censuring the FDA for prematurely enforcing the NDI draft guidance while supposedly still in draft. The report goes on to further state: “The Committee urges FDA to withdraw the July 2011 NDI draft guidance and re-engage the dietary supplement community to develop a new guidance on what constitutes NDI.” This appears to be another reason the FDA is finally listening.

While the FDA has not yet agreed to a specific timeline for revising the guidance, nor indicated what exactly will be revised, they did commit to collaborating with the dietary supplement industry to create a list of agreed-upon “grandfathered” dietary ingredients (ie. supplements).

 A “grandfathered” dietary ingredient is an ingredient marketed before 1994 and therefore not considered an NDI (new). Grandfathered dietary ingredients are therefore not subject to the NDI guidance. Currently, there is no authoritative list of “grandfathered” dietary ingredients, leaving the legal status of many dietary supplements in limbo.

Although an authoritative list of “grandfathered” dietary ingredients could be useful to the supplement industry, we fear that the FDA will use this as an opportunity to knock out supplements that were indeed on the market before 1994 but may not meet the FDA’s idea of proof. This is precisely what happened to pyridoxamine, one of only three natural and bioavailable forms of vitamin B6. Although we know that pyridoxamine was on the market before 1994, the FDA determined that there was not enough of the right kind of evidence to conclusively prove so, and removed the ingredient from the market.

ANH-USA will participate in this process to try to ensure that the list of “grandfathered” dietary ingredients is inclusive in order to maintain your access to as many supplements as possible. We will also try to prevent the FDA from using the list as an excuse to delay indefinitely their promise to revise the draft guidance.

Calcium- Moringa Leaves versus American Foods

Calcium is one of the most important minerals needed by our body. Calcium with magnesium is needed to build bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves. Nerve health is really important considering all the factors in life right now, that rips up our nervous system. 

Calcium is involved in many different body processes including the maintenance of healthy blood pressure, healthy weight, helps prevent cardiovascular disease, and colon cancer. 

There are many kinds of Calcium and they are not created equally.  The form of Calcium makes a huge difference in whether we absorb that Calcium that we intake. Some of the Calcium sources below are so hard for the body to break down and utilize, it is like throwing the Calcium down the toilet.

Calcium is best absorbed in a acidic environment. People who have insufficient stomach acid, who have compromised digestive function, or stomach problems should really be careful on the form of Calcium they take. 

Calcium Carbonate- This is basically chalk, like you write on a black board with. It takes a huge amount of stomach acid to break it down. Calcium carbonate is also found in rocks, sea shells, and pearls. It is alkaline based.

Eggshell Calcium- Made from eggshells as the name suggests. It also takes much stomach acid to utilize in the digestive tract. 

Calcium Citrate:  is an acidic form of calcium which does not take much stomach acid to break it down. You can take Calcium citrate at any time of the day. It is more easily absorbed by the body.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite is young bovine bone, and is processed without heat or chemicals to retain all bone minerals and organic residues completely intact and in their natural physiological ratios. It is the organic components of bone -- collagen, mucopolysaccarides, amino acids, etc. -- that contribute to the enhanced absorption of calcium into the bone.

Look at the foods below high in calcium, and the main people who eat a diet rich in these foods are either Asian or come from the south where they eat a lot of beans for meals.  They typical American does not eat much in the beans or the veggies listed below.  Oranges also contain  a lot of sugar as well.  Oranges are acid and often cause women bladder distress. Diabetics are another group where fruit and fruit juice is a problem.

What's Eating My Moringa Seedlings?

Have you ever planted your Moringa seedlings, tiny ones, in a pot only to see them disappear.  Well here is one problem that you may not know to look for.  I brought these planters originally from California where we lived to Nevada.  When I planted the original trees, they were big and sturdy so no problems. They were also in a greenhouse.

Just recently, I took the dead trees out of the planters where they had frozen last winter. The soil has  live redworms, worm castings, and is really good soil. So I decided to replant in those same containers. Remember, I said that the original trees were big when they were transplanted into these 33 gallon trash cans.  Yes, I do mean 33 gal trash cans on wheels with huge saucers under them. I have 5 of these in the living room and three 20 gal containers as well. We have devoted our huge living room to Moringa trees and scented geraniums, and two Pau D'Arco trees. By the way red worms grow huge in the roots of the Moringa trees. Well I transplanted some little tiny seedlings into these large containers to see how it went. The next morning,  I went to show my husband what I had done, and two were missing all together, no sign of them. The others were fine.  I thought perhaps the cats had somehow gotten up there and helped out. This happened twice, and I couldn't figure it out.

What are Rolly Pollies or Pill bugs? You have seen them, just didn't know what they were.  They roll up into a ball when threatened.  They look harmless but..........

So this morning I took a spoon out and dug into the area where the sprout had been. Low and behold, a bunch of gray bugs called Rolly Pollies, came out.  I realized then, there was a hatching there of these gray bugs underneath the soil.  Rolly Pollies will eat the tender sprouts of veggie plants and Moringa as well. They leave the adult vines alone.  So I took an organic bug killer and sprayed the bug patch. I was careful to keep the spray off the rest of the seedlings.  As they tried to get away, I scooped them up and dumped them into a container of water.  I then put black pepper over the area where they had hatched.   I will leave it on for a couple of days then scoop out that dirt, replace it with new dirt, to get the eggs out.  I could not take the whole top layer out because of the other seedlings that were doing ok.  Moringa seedlings are very delicate and tender, so watch out for animals critters and these bugs.

In some areas it could be ants that eat your tree leaves.  Diatomaceous earth works well on them. DM Earth consists on fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. It cuts the ants internal organs and skin and they die. They cannot become resistant because it is not a chemical. It does not work like spray, it kills them slowly over several days. It works best when kept dry. You reapply once a week over a two foot area over and around the ant entrance.  It will not harm any animal, but does kill earthworms and bees.  Don't use over the flower part of the plant but at the root. If you have red worms as I do in my containers, you cannot use it there.  It is highly effective and comes in 50 pound sacks. The DM earth powder is heavy and does not blow off the ground much.  Coat the ant entrance heavily.

One  Solution:

plastic drink cup or toilet paper rolls work.

Scrape the mulch out of your pots. Rolly Pollies eat and lay their eggs in the mulch. My containers had contained mulch because of the cold last winter.  Scrape out the top layer of dirt if possible, where a lot of the bug eggs are.

Make sure the area around the stem and seed ball are free from insects before you start. When you plant the seedlings into the soil, take a plastic drink cup and cut out the  bottom,  plant the seedling, then plant the cup over it, pushing the bottom of the cup down into the ground around the little seedling's roots. Protect them like you would squash plants or other tender veggie plants.

Another solution, if you don't have worms in your soil, is to dump the old soil, start with new potting soil. The rolly poly bugs are in the top part of the soil. 

There are many chemicals to kill the bugs but I don't like chemicals.  Even the organic bug sprays will burn tender new seedlings.  The new seedlings in the picture above are doing fine so far.  I used toilet rolls instead of plastic cups.   I water inside of the rolls as well. The water goes right down into the roots.

My trees are growing slower because they do not have their right climate. I keep yogurt containers filled with water next to the trees to add some humidity. I also spray them. If I could put them out in the sun, they would be three times this big.

Why don't I do that? 

We have 60 mile winds today. It is tearing everything up outside. The locals say the winds are much more severe than they have ever seen. Climate Change? We have had 40 miles winds off and on for days. The wind is destructive to everything, turning leaves black like they are burnt. Everything planted on this property must have a natural or created wind break.  The Moringa could not survive the wind here. We will get a greenhouse built this fall, and then that will make a huge difference. Until then, they must be kept in the house. I took the water out to take the picture and check for rolly pollies.   I will check this pot often for awhile.  There are still live red worms in this huge container.

In the windbreaks we have created, we do have tomatoes, peppers, and squash that are surviving the wind. Again, you must create windbreaks.  Some would say, why work this hard.  I like my own fresh veggies. I love my Moringa trees...they are a passion, even if I must keep them in the house.  I believe God brought us here so it must be to show me how to grow here despite the wind.
